Empowerment of UK Asian Schools For Local and Global Development
Empowerment of UK Asian Schools For Local and Global Development

Background

In working with Asian people in the UK, school education was identified as a key area in which to become actively involved.  Last year a pilot plan was launched to develop and promote the project.  This year has built upon the success of last year's pilot plan and the project in Asian summer schools in the Birmingham area to develop education with both teachers and children, has progressed considerably.

Activities

The main activities are :

  • Building partnerships with 5 Asian predominate summer schools

  • Developing the school curriculum to include communicating directly with schools in India on local and global issues of South Asia.

  • Conducting workshops and photographic exhibitions for students, other attendees, and stakeholder organisations.

  • Developing links between the summer schools and 5 schools in Jharkhand State, India.

The main achievements were :

  • Continuing from previous years, the project  ran 5 Summer Schools through Asian community organisations. The focus in this year has been on the values of aid to the poor and problems of working children and girls in India.

  • The project conducted exhibitions, displayed photos on the life of poor mica and carpet working children, women and tribes in India. Also the links of the people in UK with the poor in India.

Though the project support is over, the activity is continued with direct information and training support to the Summer School Teachers.

Objectives

The main purpose of the project is to make the school children aware of local global development issues and building links with schools in India, effectively bringing about changes in attitudes and co-operation whilst at the same time educating UK children in a positive and practical way on all the issues referred to above.
