Empowerment of UK Asian Schools For Local and Global Development
Background
In
working with Asian people in the UK, school education was
identified as a key area in which to become actively involved.
Last year a pilot plan was launched to develop and promote the
project. This year has built upon the success of last year's
pilot plan and the project in Asian summer schools in the
Birmingham area to develop education with both teachers and
children, has progressed considerably.
Activities
The
main activities are :
Building
partnerships with 5 Asian predominate summer schools
Developing
the school curriculum to include communicating directly with
schools in India on local and global issues of South Asia.
Conducting
workshops and photographic exhibitions for students, other
attendees, and stakeholder organisations.
Developing
links between the summer schools and 5 schools in Jharkhand
State, India.
The
main achievements were :
Continuing
from previous years, the projectran 5 Summer Schools through Asian community
organisations. The focus in this year has been on the values
of aid to the poor and problems of working children and girls
in India.
The
project conducted exhibitions, displayed photos on the life of
poor mica and carpet working children, women and tribes in
India. Also the links of the people in UK with the poor in
India.
Though
the project support is over, the activity is continued with direct
information and training support to the Summer School Teachers.
Objectives
The
main purpose of the project is to make the school children aware
of local global development issues and building links with schools
in India, effectively bringing about changes in attitudes and
co-operation whilst at the same time educating UK children in a
positive and practical way on all the issues referred to above.
