Garhwa district in the state of Jharkhand is one of the most backward, poverty affected and food scarce district in India. It is characterized by high rate of illiteracy, child mortality rate and migration.
Frequent droughts in district have resulted in distress migration. Uneven land holding patterns, land alienation among dalits and tribes, degradation of natural resources also have boosted up migration.
As a result, Alternative for India Development (AID), a national level NGO, that is already running several programmes related to women empowerment, child labour, community radio etc, in this region since decades, decided to work to control and fight distress migration in Garhwa district.
