To facilitate easy
access the much needed information at door step for the people and make
them aware of the sources of relief measures Information centres (IC)
were set up at various villages. These ICs act as resource centre for
supply and procurement of information and function as an entry point at
micro-level for abridging the people with the ongoing institutional
service providers. The ICs also coordinate our social reconstruction
works and serve as counseling venue for sharing gender-specific health
information.
In
Silladi, the Information Centre is dedicated exclusively for the needs
of the affected women
20 tents – 10 each at Nagapattinam and Parangipettai blocks were set up
as Information Centres. Every Information Centre has the records of
village population, number of people affected, the details of damages,
the details of the people who lost their lives and the wounded, the
details of damaged fishing gears, the details of the persons, etc. A
muster roll is kept in the ICs which are signed by the Government
officials when they come for visits to the respective villages.
Information relating to Government and Relief and Rehabilitation like
GOs of State Government, Government Polices, Schemes of Central
Government, Schemes of Fisheries Department, Schemes of Social Welfare
Department, and Schemes of Adi-Dravidar Welfare Department are made
available for ready reference in these ICs.
The staff finds out the requirements of the people around the place. The
people are informed before hand the arrival of the various officials to
the villages through the centre. The petitions of the people are given
to the concerned officials through the centre especially petitions
relating to the assistance for elders, destitute and others. People come
to know about the various news through the newspapers kept at the
centre.
When the municipality workers come to clean the camps, they first sign
in the register kept at the centre and then start their work. People
inform the centre about problems relating to water supply, power,
sanitation and sewage. Our staff approaches the concerned departments to
take appropriate remedial action.
Moreover, the staff at the centre, tells the people about the
forthcoming medical camp and prepare the list and register in a book
kept at ICs. Based on the criticality, the list for consultation is
prepared and the people are called for the medical camp. Children are
being treated for psychological development through the centre. The
centre conducts rally and awareness camp to bring back the people to
normalcy. There are handbills, posters, various brochures, etc., at the
centre. People get various information from them.
Other organizations too ask for information from the centre. To allot
permanent houses to the inmates of the temporary shelter, the officials
have approached the centre for necessary information about the people
affected. The centre also has the list of organizations that supported
the affected people with the information on the benefits received.
The Information centres work as Multi-purpose centres. The information
centres are receiving petitions of various natures from the public and
forward them to the respective authorities. Each centre provides
newspapers and magazines for the people to update themselves with the
current developments as far as Tsunami relief and rehabilitation works
of the Government and other organizations are concerned.
