Activities

The results and achievements were :

Capacity building, promotion / strengthening of people organisations

  • Training of the village panchayat leaders, village education committee members and women leaders for organisational development, planning and action

  • Training and exposure visit to office bearers of community organisations and members

  • Strengthening Village panchayats

  • Creating user and women self-help groups and sustaining the forums

  • Creating / strengthening Village Education Committees

Soil and water conservation activities and soil conservation measures

Water Conservation Measures

  • Revival, renovation and construction of ahar (water storage systems) using indigenous water technology

  • Construction and repair of Acheck dams@ (small dams).

  • Promotion and installation of lift irrigation systems

  • Construction of drinking water wells

  • Repair and deepening of irrigation wells and water distribution systems

  • Pump-sets (motorized pumps and piping) for small farmers .

Soil and water conservation activities and soil conservation measures

  • Promotion of direct employment through land conservation works

  • Reclamation of additional acres of land for  cultivation.

  • Village level campaign on watershed and livelihood issues through workshops, exhibitions, farmer's rallies and public awareness meetings

Livelihood empowerment training (training for employment)

  • Agricultural training (cultivation of rice, maize and lentils) and extension

  • Training on vegetable cultivation

  • Training on plant nurseries and plantation development.

  • Training in farming goats, poultry, dairy, fisheries and  mushroom cultivation

  • Training on taser (silk production), lac cultivation and bee keeping

  • Training on pulse processing and its marketing.

  • Promotion of locally sustainable employment e.g. farming, market trading etc.

Community organization achievements

The development of committees within organizations and some of the results of their efforts are summarized.

  • 81 village committees with further sub-committees were formed to look after the range of issues (each with its own committee) :

  • Forest

  • Grazing

  • Water

  • Education

  • Health

  • 42 Mahila Mandals, 7 panchayats women's committees, 170 SHGs were formed and all received training in various subjects including thrift and credit and maintenance of accounts.

  • The abilities of communities have been enhanced to the degree they are now better able  to engage in bargaining and decision-making processes and encouraging the participation of women in the Gram Sabhas

  • 3 SHGs have developed the cultivation of tassar earning a total of Rs. 3,42,156 through production of cocoons being an average income of Rs. 9000 for each member.

  • The sum of Rs. 4,03,153 has been deposited into 170 SHGs= accounts by personal contribution of their members.

Education sector achievements - enrolment

  • 78% of children in the age group 5 to 14 years are now enrolled either in Government or day schools managed by A I D in all project areas.

  • Significantly, the enrolment of girls has increased by 7% this compared with last year.

  • The enrolment ratio of girls to boys in 2002 was 36:64, increasing in 2003 to 40:60

  • 7 defunct Government schools have been regularized and are now fully operational.

Education sector achievements - dropout and retention

  • The overall dropout rate in primary education has decreased from 11.2% in 2002 to 9.4% in 2003.

  • The average attendance of students has increased from 52% in 2002 to 56% in 2003.

Education sector achievements - quality of education

  • NCERT syllabus has been adopted in primary schools and a separate child friendly curriculum has been developed for pre-school and NFE children.

  • Exposure visits for students to nearby model primary schools, high schools, police stations, primary health centres and block development offices were undertaken.

  • In-service training was provided to over 150 teachers.

Education sector achievements - school management and infrastructure development

  • SMCs of all schools have assumed full control for the running of school affairs, including the management, supervision and disbursement of teachers' salaries.  This has brought about increased control and participation of the communities in school management.

  • Kitchen gardens along with green fencing have been completed in 11 day schools.

  • The construction of additional classrooms in 4 schools is in progress.

  • School libraries have been established in 4 schools.

Education sector achievements - student's health

  • Regular health check ups have had the effect of increased awareness amongst school children and helped to check the spread of common diseases.

  • The school environment, cleanliness and personal hygiene of students has improved.

Education sector achievements - linkages

  • Liaison and advocacy with Government institutions, networking with like-minded organizations and educational institutions has lead to improved the punctuality of teachers and the quality of education in primary schools in remote areas.

Health sector achievements

  • All children below 5 years were immunized under the pulse polio programme. There have been no new reported cases of polio.

  • Organization of 76 immunization camps covering 6,154 beneficiaries.

  • 125 cases of child marriage have been stopped.

  • Organization of awareness camps making direct contact with more than 8,000 people.

  • Organization of 20 clinical health camps at which 3061 people attended.

  • Organization of mother and child health care camps with attendance of 1260.

  • More than 150 health education campaign drives have been conducted, including puppet shows, video shows and meetings addressing more than 30000 people.

  • 18 health workers have been given  training to improve their knowledge and skills.

  • Regular meetings with Government officials have resulted in the regular functioning of PHCs.

  • Decreased instances of cerebral malaria, diarrhea and tuberculosis (TB).

  • Referral services provided to more than 900 people for cases of leprosy, TB and cerebral malaria through district health centres and mission hospitals.

  • First aid services provided at 10 village health centres.

Livelihood outcomes achieved

  • In 2003, a moderate drought prevailed in Lesliganj

  • 41 irrigation structures have been created to supplement the irrigation to the target families and increase in productivity.

  • Drinking water made available through the repair and construction of 17 wells

  • Employment opportunities created for 1050 farmers through training and credit support.

  • 50 members from 3 SHGs produced and marketed tassar cocoon and seed (eggs) for rupees 2.4 lacks.

  • 290 male members (representing 290 households) have been given training in lac cultivation and consequently in 2004,  they are expecting improved yields and income through better marketing connections.

  • 13,797 man working days were created in agriculture employment for which direct wages were paid up to June 03.

  • Similarly, 554.53 acres (221.81 ha) area were cultivated up to June 03.

  • 66.13 acres of >tanr= (fallow) land made cultivable through land levelling up to last week of December 2003.

  • Supply of high yielding maize seed resulted in 55.33% increase in production in the target villages.

  • Value addition in traditional pulse storage through processing and increase in income to three SHGs.

  • Fish rearing and increase in income in five villages.

  • Developed strong connections with research institutions and universities.
