An
earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale struck northern Sumatra early morning on 26 December 2004. This was followed by a series of over ten
earthquakes. The resultant tsunamis have caused widespread damage in the
coastal areas of many countries including Tamilnadu in India, the worst hit.
Within minutes,
millions of people lost their livelihood, homes and life supporting
infrastructure by the ferocious tsunami waves. Decades of earned gains are
destroyed and people are dispossessed. They are stranded, deserted and
become destitute.
AID has
started Information Support Centers in the tsunami-hit villages in Nagapattinam
and Cuddalore districts to enable people with useful and essential
information regarding the relief and rehabilitation works underway in the
villages. The
AID Information Centers are aimed at providing necessary assistance and
support needed for restoring the community life which has been almost lost
by the eruption of waves. The following
