Nagore hit by the nature’s fury

Nagore Darga is also a popular Muslim religious site which is hard hit by the tsunami. Pattanacheri, Siddthali and Samanthakuppam around Nagore were the three villages mostly affected in this area.  In Pattanacheri village alone, nearly 1800 families, in Siddthali village, nearly 200 families and Samanthakuppam village around 400 families were perished by the titanic tsunami. Of the total 12000 population, people alive now are about three thousand. The rest was all drowned in the sea. However, only, 400 hundred dead bodies found lying in the seashore.  The Muslims in the Dargh made timely help and sheltered the victims in the mosque, schools. They provided food, rescued buried dead bodies. First two days, only local people did all relief. After that, NGOs and government engaged in relief work.
Another sad part of the tragedy was that, few vicious persons, taking advantage of the deaths, indulged in nefarious activity of stealing the gold jewels, ear rings and plundered the materials. Villagers narrated many harrowing stories of cut ears, fingers and other signs of snatching the golden ornaments worn by the dead persons. Few unscrupulous elements made fortune by cashing on the catastrophe.
